Here are some fascinating facts about Baroque composers:
The Baroque period first appeared around 1600 and lasted 150 years. It began in Italy and rapidly spread out into Europe. The Baroque period was like no other time in musical history, as it influenced every facet of life, from dance, fashion, literature, architecture, and music.
Johann Sebastian Bach
Bach was one of the best well-known and prolific composers of the Baroque era. Bach is to music what Leonardo Da Vinci was to art and Shakespeare was to literature. Bach had 20 children. How did he write 1100 works of music?
With over 3000 works, more than both Bach and Handel put together, Telemann was considered the most prolific composer in musical history. Yet, he was almost completely self-taught.
George Frideric Handel
Beethoven called Handel the greatest composer that ever lived. Handel was the official composer for King George I of England. “Water Music” was written to be played on a boat while the King travelled along the river Thames. The story goes that when King George I heard the Hallelujah chorus being performed, the King was so moved, he stood up. To this day, it is customary to stand up during the Hallelujah chorus.
Purcell was one of the greatest English composers of all time, whose legacy was a uniquely English form of Baroque music. Purcell’s death is unclear. It is said he either died when his wife locked him out of the house one night, or by chocolate poisoning.
An Italian master of the Baroque era, whose timeless incredible works of “The Four Seasons” marked the zenith of his career. Vivaldi was initially an ordained priest whose nickname was Il Prete Rosso (The red-haired priest).
